Machine Carving

Sometimes a carver wants to make a big statement with their craft, but it would take way too much time to remove the timber with just a chisel and mallet. At other times, you need to create a particular pattern or texture to the surface that traditional tools cannot provide. At these times and at other times when the traditional approaches simply do not work, the carver needs to consider using more mechanized approaches to carving using such tools as Arbortech, Sabour or Rotarex. This course represents an opportunity for carvers with some experience to get familiar with these very versatile tools. Ideally the student should have some experience of using power tools and be confident when handling tools that rotate at high speed such as power drills and angle grinders. The course will cover the marking out and shaping of the shallow bowl, Hollowing with the power tools, Exterior shaping with power tools and carving disks and Finishing with power sanders and carving chisels. The end result will be making shallow trencher type bowl in lime using a variety of Rotarex, Sabur and other power carving disks in 4” angle grinders and using “Arbourtech” mini power carving tools.

Power tools, disks and materials will be supplied but please bring your own safety equipment such as anti vibration gloves, eye protection Visor, dust mask, aprons or smocks and ear defenders (the school can provide eye protection and ear defenders other items can be provided at an additional cost.)
